Conservative opposition group leader Jeremy Moulton said the car parks were “key to the success of Bedford Place as a shopping area”.

“I have been working hard to ensure the voice of business is listened to and suggesting to the council alternatives which could save money for the council whilst continuing to support needs of local businesses and people,” he said.

Sarah Bogle, cabinet member for economic development, said the council was looking at selling some of the site and retaining part of it.

“It’s important that whilst we look at options and proposals for Amoy Street car parks that we review the parking on offer across Bedford Place to ensure it is safe, accessible, and convenient for those who work and visit the area,” she said.

The review of the car parks in Amoy Street is part of the Labour-run council’s wider asset development and disposal programme.
