Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a 58-year-old woman fell to her death from the balcony of a hotel in downtown Toronto on Sunday afternoon.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says at about 1 p.m. officers from Toronto Police Service were dispatched to a hotel near Yonge and Colborne Street, just south of King Street West, after receiving reports of a person staying there who was creating a disturbance.
The civilian agency says upon arriving in the building lobby, officers were told that the individual had returned to her unit. They then made their way to the door, it said.
“A short time later, the officers were made aware that the woman had fallen from the balcony of the unit. She was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the SIU said in a news release.
Three investigators have now been assigned to the case.
The SIU, which is called in to investigate when police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person, is asking anyone with information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
