Crossover between GAA and soccer is a common occurrence in Ireland, with even our professional players often being steeped in our national games.
Quite a few of them were accomplished GAA players in their younger days before making the full-time commitment to soccer. As well as that, many of them often return to the sport after their professional career ends.
Jonathan Douglas is one example, having returned to Gaelic football in Monaghan in recent times. John Egan has suggested he could do something similar in the future, while another former Ireland manager has now made the move into GAA management.

Eunan O’Kane earned seven caps for the Republic of Ireland during his playing career, although his time in professional football would be cut short due to injury. Still, he would have an impressive career in English football with the likes of Bournemouth and Leeds United.
O’Kane officially hung up his boots in 2021, although his last appearance in club football would three years before that point. He has since returned to his native Derry, where he has become involved in Gaelic football once again.
As reported by Gaelic Life, Eunan O’Kane has been appointed as manager of Derry GAA club Banagher.
The 35-year old played for the club in his youth and has been involved in their coaching setup in recent years. He was also part of the management team with Antrim ladies side Moneyglass during their recent run to the All-Ireland final.
Banagher currently compete in the senior ranks in Derry. They reached the quarter-finals of the competition in 2026, ultimately being eliminated by defending champions Glen.
