Burnley Borough Council will convene special meetings of its Scrutiny and Executive Committees on Tuesday 13th January 2026 to consider a letter received from the Minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) regarding local government capacity and the potential postponement of scheduled local elections in the context of ongoing discussions around local government reorganisation.
The Council emphasises that the decision on whether to proceed with or postpone the elections rests solely with the Secretary of State. Burnley Council is not the decision-maker in this matter but has been invited to provide its perspective on its capacity arising from the government’s local government reorganisation programme.
The special meetings will take place on Tuesday 13th January 2026, with the Scrutiny Committee meeting scheduled for 6.30pm, followed by the Executive meeting at 8pm, or at the close of the Scrutiny meeting, whichever is later. These meetings will allow elected members to scrutinise the contents of the Minister’s letter, assess the implications for the borough and its democratic processes, and agree a formal response.
