Public health officials are asking people to monitor themselves for symptoms of measles over the holidays if they recently were at one of two schools or a restaurant in southern Manitoba.
Anyone who was at the Outpost Grill, located the junction of Highways 3 and 14 near Winkler, Man., on Dec. 13 between 2 and 9 p.m. should monitor for symptoms of the virus until Jan. 4, 2026, the province said in a news release Monday.
Those who were at the same restaurant on Dec. 15 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. are asked to monitor for symptoms until Jan. 6.
The province says people might also have been exposed to measles last week at Morden Collegiate in Morden, Man., and at Mitchell Elementary School in Mitchell, Man.
Officials are asking anyone who was at Morden Collegiate between 8:50 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. on Dec. 15 to monitor for measles symptoms until Jan. 6. Anyone who was at the high school during the same hours on Dec. 17 is asked to monitor until Jan. 8.
People who were at Mitchell Elementary on Dec. 15 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. are asked to monitor until Jan. 6.
People who were at one or more of these locations during the specified times are urged to check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV).
Measles is a highly infectious disease that spreads through droplets formed in the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. Even a few minutes in the same space as a sick person poses infection risks, as the virus can linger in an airspace for two hours.
Most people recover fully from measles within two or three weeks. Complications are more common in infants and adults and those with weakened immune systems.
There have been 290 confirmed measles cases and 25 probable cases reported since February, according to provincial health numbers, which were updated on Friday and cover up to Dec. 13.
