Work to transform Castle Road into a safer, more attractive destination for residents and visitors is well underway – and taking a short festive break before resuming in the new year.
This exciting project is part of Portsmouth City Council’s vision to enhance local business areas and create spaces where people can relax, shop, and enjoy the city’s unique character.
Castle Road is a thriving hub of independent shops and businesses and first became pedestrianised in 2020. The current improvements build on that success of a safer walking environment by introducing a level paved surface with a central pathway. New planters and trees will also add greenery and charm with the hidden benefit of sustainable drainage.
So far, almost 70 metres of Castle Road has been upgraded with stylish block paving leading up to Cecil Grove. Two raised beds with conservation kerbs are complete, and tree and shrub planting will follow early next year. The different coloured bricks you may notice mark future raised bed locations for plants.
Getting here is now even easier thanks to the updated Stagecoach number 18 bus route, and all shops will stay open throughout the works, with full access for residents and deliveries.
The Portsmouth City Council street scene and urban design, delivered by Colas Limited, follows extensive public consultation earlier this year. Castle Road is a key part of the council’s District Local Town Centre programme, funded to support vibrant, welcoming spaces for everyone.
Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council with responsibility for Culture, said:
“Castle Road is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision. This is a place for everyone in Portsmouth to enjoy, explore, and get creative. We’re grateful for everyone’s patience while the works are carried out – Portsmouth will gain a hidden gem for 2026.”
Local businesses are already feeling the benefits:
Annie Flitcroft, of Annie Flitcroft Ceramics – who recently joined the area – shared:
“We’ve felt so welcomed into the community as a relocating business. Chewie (pictured below) already knows where to find dog treats and loves greeting friends on their walks to Southsea Common. We’re excited for the added greenery coming next year; it will look fabulous in the spring.”
Belinda Delaney, of the recently refurbished Delaneys, added:
“The upgrades are really adding to the café culture that has blossomed over the last five years. This is a safe space for alfresco eating and drinking all year round, and is a great place to people-watch, unwind, and enjoy a quiet coffee.”
