Insp Sharland said: “This is a time of the year where lots of people we know want to go out and have fun. We’re not party poopers, we want people to enjoy themselves but do it responsibly and don’t take risks when it comes to drink and drug driving.”

He said that the message of the campaign is one that could save lives.

He added: “When I get called out in the middle of the night and I go to those tragic scenes of road death, it reminds us of the reason we come out and do this.”

There’s also increased patrols and it’s hoped that a heightened police presence will act as a deterrent to anyone tempted to drive while they could be unfit to do so.

Sergeant Paul Weston with Hampshire Police said: “We deal with a lot of crashes in the roads policing unit and we go to a lot of crashes where impairment is a factor. We need to be out here and be seen.”

In 2024, Hampshire & IOW Constabulary made a total of 322 arrests during Operation Limit.

There were 152 motorists arrested on suspicion of drink driving and 170 arrested on suspicion of drug driving.
