The late John Lee, a pivotal figure in the development of the Upper Clutha district through the development of the Cardrona Alpine Resort, Cardrona Hotel and the Snow Farm cross-country skiing facility, has been farewelled at a private ceremony today.

A statement released on behalf of the Lee family said the 89-year-old died peacefully on Sunday with his family by his side.

Mr Lee and wife Mary bought Mt Cardrona Station in 1971, and spent the rest of the decade developing a ski area there.

Cardrona Alpine Resort opened to the public in 1980.

The couple’s next major project, the world-class cross-country skiing facility at Waiorau, Snow Farm, opened in 1990.

The Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds came to life during the development of Snow Farm in 1984.

The Lees then supported their youngest son Sam in the development of freestyle skiing and snowboarding facility Snow Park, in the early 2000s.

A public celebration of Mr Lee’s life and contribution to the community will be held at 2pm on February 7 at the Cardrona Distillery.

An obituary will follow.
