Town Launches Naming Contest for New Public Art Exhibition

The Town of Danville is inviting the community to help bring a new public art exhibit to life by naming 10 bronze acorns now installed throughout Downtown Danville in both clearly visible and slightly hidden public spaces. Through January 31, community members are invited to preview the sculptures comprising the Acorns of the Old Oak exhibition and vote on their favorite names as part of a naming contest.

Most Danville residents know the Town’s deep connection to oak trees. From mascot Auggie the Acorn to the iconic Old Oak Tree, the oak represents a deep-rooted tradition. So, when the Town began planning its first permanent public art exhibition, acorns were a natural choice.

The result is Acorns of the Old Oak, an exhibition of 10 bronze acorn sculptures placed in key locations across Downtown. The sculptures were created by California artist Chad La Fever, who was selected through an open call for artist qualifications in spring 2025. Each acorn is about the size of a softball, and together they create a playful, walkable art experience for residents and visitors alike.

Once all 10 acorns are officially named, each sculpture will be paired with its own story designed to bring the acorns to life. Visitors will be able to access a map to learn more about each acorn, follow clues to locate them, and engage with additional educational and family-friendly materials. Future elements of the project will include a printable coloring book and an upcoming storybook featuring Auggie and the newly named acorn friends.
