Travel is likely to be challenging throughout a swath of Northern Ontario Thursday night and into Friday, including the Greater Sudbury Area
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning throughout the Greater Sudbury area, effective Christmas night and continuing into Boxing Day.
“Significant snowfall” is anticipated, amounting to nearly 15 cm, including reduced visibility at times in heavy snow, plus blowing snow near the North Channel and Manitoulin Island.
The yellow-level warning (moderate, localized and/or short-term) was issued for:
Sault Ste. Marie – St. Joseph Island, Ont. (048830)
Greater Sudbury and vicinity, Ont. (049100)
Espanola – Killarney, Ont. (049920)
Manitoulin Island, Ont. (049930)
Yellow level warning – snowfall – continued for:
Manitouwadge – Hornepayne, Ont. (048330)
White River – Dubreuilville, Ont. (048710)
Agawa – Lake Superior Park, Ont. (048810)
Searchmont – Montreal River Harbour – Batchawana Bay, Ont. (048820)
Elliot Lake – Ranger Lake, Ont. (049200)
Chapleau – Missinaibi Lake, Ont. (049610)
Blind River – Thessalon, Ont. (049910)
The Environment Canada impact level is “moderate,” and the forecast confidence is “high.”
“Snow, heavy at times, is expected to move into the region overnight.” according to Environment Canada. “Snow will end from north to south during the day on Friday. Strong winds from the northwest gusting up to 60 km/h near the North Channel and Manitoulin Island may reduce visibility to near zero at times.”
They caution that travel will likely be challenging, roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate and visibility will be reduced at times.
