Mr Ralphs said it was an easy one to tick off the New Year’s resolutions, and a launchpad for trying other physical activities.

But while many people might shudder at the thought of physical exertion on Christmas Day, Mr Ralphs said times had changed.

“As a nation, we’re a bit more active than it used to be, so it’s not that unusual to go for a run on Christmas Day, whereas it used to be really niche,” he said.

When asked why the Parkrun was special, Mr Ralphs said: “I think it’s just the fun element, seeing your friends. It’s a nice start to the day.

“Let’s be honest, it’s not for everybody, a lot of people want to wake up and have an eggnog or a glass of champagne.

“But if you want, you can have a run, see your mates have a giggle and maybe burn off a few calories.”
