Fire crews were sent to put out a blaze at the Casey House in Toronto’s Church and Wellesley neighbourhood on Saturday.
Crews were dispatched to 119 Isabella St. at 2:46 p.m., where alarms were sounding when they arrived.
Officials say the incident involved a lithium-ion battery from a mobility scooter in one of the building’s units. No one was inside the unit at the time.
The fire has since been extinguished. There are no reports of injuries.
The Casey House is a specialty hospital that provides care to people living with and at risk of HIV.
Lisa McDonald, director of communications with the Casey House, confirmed to CP24 that there was a small fire in a vacant inpatient room.
“Out of an abundance of caution, together with EMS and the fire department, we are evacuating the 12 clients currently staying on the inpatient unit,” she said.
Outpatient services take place on a different floor of the building and are not scheduled to re-open until Monday morning.
