TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – In the early hours of Friday morning, a civilian was shot and killed after attempting to illegally enter Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, officials said.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 when the individual, who was not affiliated with the military, failed to stop at the base’s main gate on Craycroft Road and was reportedly driving erratically, according to officials.
Officials said the individual crashed into a deployed vehicle barrier and then reversed their vehicle. Members of the 355th Security Forces Squadron followed their levels of force protocol and used weapons to stop the suspect, according to officials.
“We certainly regret the loss of life that occurred early this morning,” said Col. Jose Cabrera, 355th Wing commander. “Our Defenders have a very difficult job and acted in accordance with their training and policy to ensure the security of the installation and safety of our Airmen.”
The incident is under investigation by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations Detachment 217.
