Sunderland stay seventh after that result, while Leeds move seven points clear of the relegation places.

ShareFull time: Sunderland 1-1 Leeds

An honourable draw between two of the Premier League’s promoted teams. Leeds were the better team, particularly in the second half, but couldn’t make the most of their dominance.

Simon Adingra gave Sunderland a half-time with a fine finish. Leeds equalised through a marvellous team goal, finished off by the in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Actually, to call him ‘in-form’ is an understatement: DCL has scored in the last six league games, two short of Billy Furness’s club record.

90+2 min Mukiele wins a throw, which he’ll take himself. He takes it short, in fact, to Xhaka, who finds Le Fee on the right. His clipped cross is headed clear at the near post.

Share

90+1 min “Leeds in a close away game in the north east and have no-one booked?” says Geoff Wignall. “The game’s truly gone.”

No idea what you’re talking about.

Share

90 min Just the three minutes of added time. For the first time in the second half, Sunderland look slightly more likely to grab a winning goal.

Share

88 min The match is threatening to peter out. A draw would be a two-sided result for both teams. Sunderland would remain unbeaten at home but didn’t play particularly well. Leeds could have won but produced arguably their best away performance of the season.

Share

85 min: Leeds substitution And Willy Gnonto replaces the Leeds goalscorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Share

85 min: Sunderland substitution Romaine Mundle replaces the goalscorer Simon Adingra.

Share

85 min The corner is headed on and over the bar by Alderete at the near post. Very tough chance, if indeed it was a chance at all.

Share

84 min Adingra waves for the crowd to make more noise after winning a corner on the left. Sunderland are having their best spell of the second half…

Share

82 min Nothing is given when Calvert-Lewin goes flying just outside the area after a borderline barge from behind by Alderete. It might have been a foul but it wasn’t a penalty, or a Dogso, so VAR can’t get involved.

Share

81 min “While Leeds certainly appear to have the upper hand lately in this match,” says Joe Pearson, “let’s not forget how many Sunderland players are currently huffing and puffing in Morocco.”

Fair point. They have six players there, which I think is more than any European club.

Share

80 min Hume barrels down the right wing and is fouled by Stach. Nothing comes of the free-kick but if I was a Leeds fan, I’d be getting a whiff of the old fatalism. They should be at least one goal up after playing so well in the second half.

77 min Although Leeds are still on top, Sunderland are starting to have their moments on the break. A roof-raising late winner isn’t beyond the realms.

Share

75 min A poor pass from Xhaka is intercepted and touched back to Ampadu, whose fierce rising drive from 25 yards is patted down by Roefs. Either side and he might have been in trouble.

73 min Calvert-Lewin clips a through pass towards Nmecha, who is eased away from the ball by Hume. There’s a bit of noise from the Leeds fans but no complaints on the field.

Share

72 min: Leeds substitution Lukas Nmecha on, Noah Okafor off.

Share

71 min A ball over the top is collected well on the run by Isidor, but he’s forced wide and can only cross into the arms of Perri.

Share

70 min A Leeds corner is headed over by the off-balance Ampadu. Leeds will be both annoyed they aren’t ahead and concerned about a late sting.

Share

68 min: Sunderland substitutions Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda come on for Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg.

Share

67 min Now Okafor blocks a long-range volley from a Leeds player, then Ampadu’s rising shot is headed away crucially by a Sunderland defender on the six-yard line. I think Roefs would have saved it.

Share

66 min Okafor moves infield from the left and whacks a shot from 20 yards that is accidentally blocked by his team-mate Calvert-Lewin.

Share

63 min Funny old game. A month ago Leeds were crap (sic), Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a waste of space (sic) and it was a matter of time before Daniel Farke was sacked. Not any more.

62 min “The current Welsh squad seems like a great bunch of young lads, has a real sense of togetherness, and when they click (which, admittedly, hasn’t always happened) they are more than the sum of their parts,” says Matt Dony. “But the side as a whole does lack genuine individual quality. So, please Daniel, look after Rodon! And if you wouldn’t mind subbing off Ampadu for a bit of extra protection, that would be useful. Diolch yn fawr.”

Hang on a minute, Dony: were you Gareth Bale’s golf facilitator?

61 min Hume is booked for a brazen tactical foul on Okafor.

Share

61 min Aaronson whistles a shot over the bar from the edge of the D.

Share

59 min Sunderland just can’t get out. Stach wins the ball in the final third, Struijk finds Aaronson and he picks out Tanaka on the edge of the area with a sharp cutback. Tanaka, on the stretch, shoots high and wide with his left foot.

58 min Aaronson, who has caused Sunderland endless problems with his runs infield from the right, wins another corner for Leeds. This one is headed away by Alderete.

Share

57 min Leeds are all over Sunderland like a cheap cliche. The fact they are playing this well with a back four suggests their recent form is about more than just our old friend tactics.

Share

55 min “Djorkaeff is a SENSATIONAL shout-out!” SAYS Robert Wilson. “Never got anything near the merited amounts of love (particularly from the French). From memory, he got 25 or so international goals and yet never really played as an out and out striker. He had so much time. His ball control was like Ricky Ponting’s pull shot, you felt like he was making tea or learning another language while doing it. A proper delight.”

I used to think his goal v Spain at Euro 96 was exhibit A for his unobtrusive class, but I’ve watched it so many times that I now think he may have miscontrolled it ever so slightly and got lucky when it hit his standing foot. Doesn’t change the delicious sensuality of the finish, mind.

54 min Adingra is tripped just outside the area by Bogle. The referee doesn’t give it and VAR can’t get involved because it wasn’t inside in the 18-yard thingy.

Share

52 min Apparently every Leeds outfield player touched the ball in the move for Calvert-Lewin’s goal. Sheer delightful footbll.

Share

51 min “Rob my dear chap,” begins Kimberley Thonger. “Against the spirit of Christmas perhaps but I have to tell you you’re just plain wrong to say (I’m paraphrasing)… ‘Hard to see a FA Cup winner from outside the top division ever happening again’

“I feel so strongly that you are off target I will put a shiny freshly minted 50 pence piece on a straight bet. Weston-super-Mare will win the FA Cup in 2026. It’s their destiny. All the famous names from WSM’s past were merely leading up to this.”

Share50 min: Big chance for Leeds!

Okafor’s inswinging cross is headed on dangerously by Aaronson. The ball bounces up awkwardly towards Bogle, four yards at the far post, and though he tries to improvise by chesting the ball past Roefs, it runs across goal rather than into the net.

Share

49 min Calvert-Lewin has now scored in six sucecessive league games, two short of the club record.

Share

It was a wonderful 12-pass move from Leeds, starting just outside their own area on the left. They worked their way skilfully through the press, then Stach swept a long pass out to Aaronson on the right. He ran at the backpedalling defender and fizzed a low cross to the near post, where Calvert-Lewin got in front of Mukiele and slipped the ball past Roes from six yards. Fabulous goal.

47 min I didn’t realise that Leeds switched to a back four after the injury to Rodon – Michael Bridges has just pointed it out on Sky. This is their revised line-up.

Leeds (4-1-4-1) Perri; Bogle, Bijol, Struijk, Gudmundsson; Ampadu; Aaronson, Tanaka, Stack, Okafor; Calvert-Lewin.

Half-time reading

ShareHalf time: Sunderland 1-0 Leeds

Like a weary post-Christmas booze-up, the first half took a while to get going but now there are shots everywhere. Simon Adingra’s excellent goal gave Sunderland a lead that felt slightly flattering until Brian Brobbery missed two excellent chances in injury time.

Leeds kept the ball well and threatened intermittently, most notably when the lively Brenden Aaronson’s shot was cleared off the line by Trai Hume.

It’s a good game between two endearingly unentitled teams. Join us in 15 minutes for another round of shots.

Share45+3 min: Brobbey hits the bar!

Another big chance for Sunderland. Adingra’s superb cross from the left is met at the far post by Brobbey, whose header from six yards hits the top of the crossbar. Not a complete sitter but probably Sunderland’s best chance of the game, the goal included.

Big chance for Brobbey!

45+2 min Le Fee clips a gorgeous pass over the top to put Brobbery through on goal. He knocks the ball past Perri but it’s a relatively tame shot and Bijol has time to get back and clear. Brobbery goes over after being caught by Perri after the ball had gone. I don’t think it affected his shot and play continues.

45+1 min “Farke Up” is the subject of Justin Kavanagh’s email.

For all his great work and flexibility of recent weeks, Daniel Farke must take some of the blame for not taking the hobbled Rodon off 15 minutes earlier. He’s not only put the defender’s long-term fitness at risk, but Rodon was obviously struggling to cover the right-hand side where the goal was scored from.

I wondered about that but it came from a long throw so I’m not sure the usual positioning rules apply. As for the earlier injury, he seemed to have run it off, though you don’t always pick these things up when you’re MBMing. I guess we don’t know for sure whether they were related.

Share

45 min Five minutes of added time, mainly because of the treatment to Joe Rodon.

Share

44 min Excellent spell this for Leeds. Bogle pushes a shorrt pass into the area for Aaronson, who wiggles his hips to create a yard and sidefoots a low cross that just evades the sliding Okafor in front of goal.

Share

42 min “Echo the sentiment about Michael Bridges and great to hear he’s making a good co-commentator too,” writes John Davis. “It’s a real shame that his career was ruined by injury, but without them there is no way he would have spent a glorious but brief spell at Carlisle – still far and away the best player I’ve ever seen at Brunton Park.

“He was so good, in fact, that my favourite memory of him is hitting a first-time volley from the edge of the area so far off target that it hit the club badge above the Warwick Road End. It was so out of character at that point that even Bridges was laughing about it. Just a lovely player to watch.”

I love creative players who do everything with an unobtrusive class and an unshowy economy. Bridges always seemed to play like that (comedy volleys notwithstanding). Youri Djorkaeff is another example.

39 min: Aaronson’s shot cleared off the line!

Fantastic defending by whoever the hell it was! Calvert-Lewin cushioned a superb volley across the area to Aaronson, who zipped back inside Alderete and rifled a low shot from 10 yards that beat the diving Roefs and was cleared desperately by … Trai Hume!

That was superb anticipation from Hume because he started to run back to the goalline the moment Aaronson came inside Alderete.

36 min Leeds have had more of the ball, around 60 per cent, and will feel a bit unfortunate to be 1-0 down. Against that, they haven’t really tested Robin Roefs, so I’m staying on the fence alongside Sir Trevor.

Updated at 15.39 CET

34 min A corner from the right is headed towards goal by the backpedalling Bijol and held comfortably by Roefs. Even Mick Harford would have struggled to score from there.

Share

33 min Gudmundsson makes a good run down the left and clips a promising early cross towards Calvert-Lewin on the six-yard line. He’s on his heels and a Sunderland defender, possibly Alderete, gets in front to clear.

Share

32 min Granit Xhaka is probably the only man on the pitch who could have seen that pass and weighted it so perfectly. If you were naming a Premier League team of the season at the halfway stage, he’d be a shoo-in.

Share

31 min: Leeds substitution Poor Joe Rodon hobbles off to be replaced by Ao Tanaka. That means Ethan Ampadu will move into the back three.
