Two people were helping police with inquiries after armed officers descended on a Dunedin coastal settlement yesterday.

The road to Long Beach was cordoned off amid a large police presence. A witness said officers had blocked the intersection at Mihiwaka Rd and Purakaunui Rd about 11.30am. A police spokesman said at 1pm the cordons had been relaxed.

“Two individuals are being spoken to and assisting police with our inquiries.”

Earlier, eight police cars were in the vicinity of Purakaunui School, and had entered Long Beach. Officers could be seen carrying firearms.

Cordons were in place as a precaution and the public was asked to avoid the area.
