Blount County Deputy Justin Mowery died Sunday afternoon while in the line of duty in a tragic car crash.
BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong announced that BCSO Deputy Justin Mowery died in the line of duty in a car crash while working his patrol shift Sunday afternoon.
“I am heartbroken. This is devastating for his family, his shift-mates, this agency, and our community,” Berrong said. “We appreciate the swift response of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and together we are working to determine how the accident happened. We are also thankful for the response from all of the surrounding law enforcement agencies as well as the offers for assistance from agencies across the state.”
Mowery was 30 years old and began his career at the BCSO in May 2020 after he attended the BCSO Regional Training Academy, graduating from Class 021 in October 2020.
In December 2021, Mowery earned a spot on the Sheriff’s Special Weapons and Tactics team, which he served on until his death. Before Mowery joined BCSO, he served as a security officer at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
“Please pray for Deputy Mowery’s family, and pray for our deputies,” Berrong said.
The Alcoa Police Department said several of its officers knew Mowery well.
“This is a terrible loss. We are all deeply affected by Deputy Mowery’s death. Several of our officers were close personal friends with Deputy Mowery. We offer support and our sincere condolences to BCSO and his family,” APD said.
The Maryville Police Department also shared a statement on social media. It can be read below.
“Chief Tony J. Crisp and all the members of the Maryville Police Department wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Blount County Sheriff Deputy Justin Mowery. Our heart breaks for the members of the Blount County Sherrif’s Office and the community to which Deputy Mowery had dedicated himself to serve.
To Justin’s friends and loved ones, we grieve with you and pray for comfort during this difficult time.

Tennessee Congressman Tim Burchett, alongside several other nearby police departments, posted on X and Facebook, offering sympathies to BCSO and Mowery’s family.”
“Please join us in prayer for the Mowery family, Sheriff Berrong and the entire Blount County Sheriff’s Department,” Burchett said.
