With heartfelt
sadness the family announces the passing of our dear Mom, Shirley
Briggs, (nee McElman). Mom passed peacefully December 28,
2025, at Shannex Thomas Hall, in Fredericton, NB. She was
96. Although devastated by the loss, we are also relieved
that Mom no longer lingers in the scary world of
Alzheimer’s.
She leaves behind
to mourn her passing, her 6 children, Francis (Terry) of Lethbridge,
AB; Aubrey (Carol, deceased) of Red Deer County, AB; Danny (Carol) of
Delta, BC; Lorna (Lloyd Chase) of Ardrossan, AB; Alden (Dawna) of New
Maryland, NB and Darlene Purdy of Kelowna,
BC.
She also leaves
behind her sister, Willa (Fred Briggs, deceased) of Kentville, NS;
brother, John (Ruth), of Fredericton, NB, and many dearly loved
grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased
by her husband of 67 years, Lorne Briggs (2013); grandsons, Troy
Aubrey Briggs (1996), and Jonathan Daniel Briggs (2006) both at the
tender age of 22; brothers Laurie, Eldon (Ty), Stewart and Royce;
parents, Elwood and Generva McElman.
Mom will be
remembered as a very hard worker, taking care of her family and home,
with unmeasurable love. She was fun loving and entertained
friends and family often. Mom loved to laugh and she was
always smiling or laughing at these
gatherings.
Mom also loved to
sew quilts and sewed at least 80 at the Minto Seniors Hall where she
served as President in 1997. She presented each of her
grandchildren, on their 21st birthdays, with one of her
beautiful creations. It was such a special gesture to all
the family.
No visitation will
be held in NB. A special celebration of her life will be
held in Ottawa in the summer of 2026 as we join Mom and
Dad’s ashes together for their final resting place at the
Beechwood National Military Cemetery. Donations to the
Alzheimer’s Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated
by the family.
