Ephron Mason-Clark and Darnell Furlong tangled in the box just after the hour, the score 0-0 at the time, but referee Anthony Backhouse was unmoved.

Jack Clarke and Wes Burns went on to score as the Blues recorded a quickfire double over Coventry to close the gap on the league leaders to 10 points.

“I thought it was a foul,” said Lampard, when quizzed on the aforementioned incident. “Somebody said to me it might not be in the box, but if it’s in the box then it’s a penalty. I thought that was quite clear, but I haven’t had chance to see it again.”

Reflecting on his side’s first home defeat of the season, he said: “We didn’t play as well as we normally do and we came up against a strong team in this league, everybody knows that, and they played well. Sometimes you have to credit the opposition.

“We were off it a little bit with our energy and bravery to play. They got a feeling in the first half for controlling it, we pulled that back a little bit in the second half, had a bit more momentum, but that wasn’t us as normal tonight.

“They have a lot of rotations, they know how they want to play and they take their time on the ball. I think we were sometimes getting coerced into pressing because the fans wanted us to press and that opened up some space for them. At half-time I told them ‘we set how we press’ and the lads had to know that. Sometimes you don’t move until they move the ball.

“I wanted to shake the lads and remind them that we came into this 13 points head of Ipswich, are top of this league and to play like it. I didn’t think the lads really had that belief. It can happen. It’s not something that’s chronic. It’s just one of those days where a good team comes along and beat us. We have to take it on the chin, stay humble and keep working.”
