Officers are investigating the death of a woman at Whitby’s clifftops – marking the third fatality at the identical spot within just two days.
The woman, aged in her 60s, was discovered by a passer-by near Whitby Abbey at 12.53pm on Thursday, July 31. This represents the third body retrieved this week from the beloved coastal resort.
North Yorkshire Police are presently examining the deaths of a man and woman found at the base of the cliffs merely one day earlier (Wednesday, July 30). Authorities have emphasised there exists no connection between the woman’s death and the previous two fatalities.
In their most recent update, officers confirmed the latest sudden death was “not suspicious” and are proceeding on the understanding that her death resulted from “a fall from the cliff”. A force representative stated: “We are investigating the sudden death of a woman aged in her 60s whose body was spotted by a member of the public below Whitby Abbey at 12.53pm on Thursday.
“Police, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue and lifeboat teams were called into assist with the incident, which is believed to have involved a fall from the cliff”, reports Yorkshire Live.
“Due to the rocky location and high tide, mountain rescue assisted in recovering the woman’s body to the lifeboat before being taken to the lifeboat house. Enquiries are ongoing to investigate the circumstances for a coroner’s report.”
The woman’s relatives have been notified and are being provided with support. Earlier this week, emergency services recovered the bodies of a man and a woman.
A call was made to the police at 7.16pm on Wednesday, July 30, by a member of the public who spotted a man and woman on the rocks below.
Witnesses to either of these tragic incidents, or anyone possessing information that could aid officers in their investigation, are strongly encouraged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference number 12250141734.
