A man was washed off a pier on the North Yorkshire coast, prompting a warning from the coastguard.

Rescue teams from Staithes and Whitby were called to Staithes Harbour at about 11:45 GMT on Tuesday, where members of the public had helped to pull the man from the water.

The casualty was taken to the lifeboat boathouse to be assessed by a doctor but needed no further treatment.

Waves are expected to continue to crash over the pier in the coming days due to the current weather conditions, with the coastguard warning people to avoid the pier at present.
