Although the Rams lost in Week 17 and remain the No. 6 seed, the No. 5 seed remains a possibility going into Week 18.
Overall, six NFC teams – including Los Angeles – have clinched a playoff berth.
Here’s what that full NFC playoff picture looks like and how various Week 18 matchups – including the Rams’ against the Cardinals at SoFi Stadium on Sunday – will impact the playoff picture.
No. 1 seed – Seattle Seahawks (clinched playoff berth)
The stakes for the Seahawks (13-3 after beating the Panthers in Carolina) are simple: Win or tie on Saturday night, clinch the division and the conference’s No. 1 seed. Lose, and fall to the No. 5 seed.
No. 2 seed – Chicago Bears (clinched playoff berth)
Despite their Sunday Night Football loss at San Francisco, 11-5 Chicago maintained control of the No. 2 seed. The Bears clinch the No. 2 seed with:
A win, OR
An Eagles loss, OR
A tie and and an Eagles tie
No. 3 seed – Philadelphia Eagles (clinched division, and by extension playoff berth)
Philadelphia (11-5) extended its win streak to three games with a nail-biting 13-12 win at Buffalo on Sunday, keeping them in contention for the No. 2 seed. For the Eagles to clinch the No. 2 seed, they need:
A win and a Bears loss or tie, OR
A tie and a Bears loss
No. 4 seed – Carolina Panthers
The Panthers’ loss to the Seahawks left them 8-8 overall, but they can clinch their first NFC South division title since 2015 with a win OR a Falcons win over the Saints in Week 18.
No. 5 seed – San Francisco 49ers (clinched playoff berth)
San Francisco (12-4) maintained control of the No. 5 seed with their 42-38 win over the Bears on Sunday Night Football. They need a win Saturday to clinch the NFC West and the No. 1 seed.
They only clinch the No. 5 seed with:
A Rams loss, OR
A tie, OR
A Rams tie
Otherwise, the 49ers will be the No. 6 seed.
No. 6 seed – Los Angeles Rams (clinched playoff berth)
Despite losing to the Falcons Monday night, the Rams (11-5) can still move up one spot in the playoff picture with a win and a Seahawks win.
No. 7 seed – Green Bay Packers (clinched playoff berth)
Green Bay (9-6-1) stayed in the No. 7 seed after losing to the Baltimore Ravens at home, but clinched a playoff berth with the Lions’ loss to the Vikings on Christmas Day. The Packers cannot move higher than this slot, and therefore will face either the Bears or the Eagles in the Wild Card round.
Key Week 18 matchups
Between division title and playoff berth-clinching scenarios, plenty is at stake across the NFC in Week 18.
Other games to watch besides Rams-Cardinals this week:
Panthers at Buccaneers (1:30 p.m. PT Saturday, ESPN and ABC): As noted above, Carolina wins the division – and also secures the No. 4 seed – with a win over Tampa Bay, so this matchup will impact who the Rams could face on Wild Card weekend, especially if the No. 5 seed remains in play Sunday.
Seahawks at 49ers (5 p.m. PT Saturday, ESPN and ABC): A Seahawks win means the Rams are playing for the No. 5 seed on Sunday; a Seahawks loss locks the Rams into the No. 6 seed.
Lions at Bears (1:25 p.m. PT Sunday, FOX): If the Rams remain the No. 6 seed, this result impacts whether they’ll go to Chicago or Philadelphia for the Wild Card round.
Commanders at Eagles (1:25 p.m. PT Sunday, CBS): Same as above. The Eagles need help from the Lions to clinch the No. 2 seed.
