The ice fishing season officially opened on Lake Nipissing on January 1.

Callander Bay is already dotted with dozens of ice huts.

Callander Bay and South Bay are popular spots, alongside the main lake.

Early reports from outfitters suggest solid ice, potentially allowing for early access to the main lake.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and local outfitters emphasize that no ice is 100 per cent safe. Anglers are advised to check local ice conditions with hut operators or other local sources before venturing onto the ice. The general rule is 4 inches for walking and 8 inches for vehicles.

You can verify current ice conditions and regulations with local outfitters or the Tourism North Bay website before heading out.

Tourism North Bay adds that Lake Nipissing is known for its abundance of fish species: walleye, perch, whitefish, burbot, smallmouth and largemouth bass and pike, providing ample opportunities for anglers to reel in their catch throughout winter and summer months.
