Construction is scheduled to begin today to replace the slipway at Quidi Vidi.
The work has been a long time coming.
In 2024 the city deemed the 40-year-old structure unsafe to use, which sparked an outcry from residents who were concerned that the slipway would be done away with altogether.
A petition was presented to city council that same year, with residents urging its cultural significance, as well as its practical use for boat launching.
All boats stored at the facility have to be removed by today.
The project will cost the city about a million dollars.
The city of St. John’s says it will do everything possible to minimize interruptions during construction.
Updates will be provided throughout the duration of the project.
