Authorities are investigating after a man was found dead in a structure fire Thursday morning in Saint John.

The man, 59, was discovered by firefighters as they battled a blaze at a three-storey building on Guilford Street on the city’s west side. Five firefighters were also injured while trying to put out the fire, according to Chief Rob Nichol of the Saint John Fire Department.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at about 10:25 a.m., Saint John Police said in a news release Friday.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire conditions, said Nichol. He said weather conditions, the volume of fire and the building’s balloon-frame construction presented “significant” challenges.

The fire was brought under control around 2 p.m., but Nichols said crews remained on the scene to extinguish hot spots.

The building sustained significant damage and is not able to be lived in, according to Nichols. It’s unclear how many people were displaced in the multi-unit building.

Police, provincial fire investigators and New Brunswick Coroner Services are investigating.Â
