A suspect attempted to flee from police by jumping into a lake after a police pursuit. CP24’s Melissa Duggan reports.

Three people are in hospital, including a police officer, following a stabbing call in Toronto’s Kensington Market area on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened near College Street and Bellevue Avenue, which is between Spadina Avenue and Bathurst Street.

Toronto police said they were called to that area just before 1 p.m. for reports of male who had stabbed a female.

There, officers located a female victim with injuries. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, police said, fled the scene.

Suspect found by waterfront: police

Investigators said they later found him near the waterfront by Lake Shore Boulevard West and Remembrance Drive. They say he had jumped into Lake Ontario.

Officers from the Marine Unit attended the area to help rescue the wanted man.

Investigators said the suspect, who has been arrested, stabbed an officer. They were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Toronto paramedics, meanwhile, told CTV News Toronto that they attended three separate locations in regard to this call and transported three people to a local hospital: an adult female with moderate, non-life-threatening, injuries; an adult male with serious, non-life-threatening injuries; and a police officer with minor injuries.

‘Another act of bravery by our members’

The Toronto Police Association is speaking out about the incident, calling what occurred “another act of bravery by our members.

“After responding to a call for a stabbing, our members find the suspect has jumped into Lake Ontario. Risking their own lives, our members rescued the suspect, who then attacked one of our TPS Marine Unit members with a knife; our member suffered knife wounds to his hands while trying to disarm the suspect,” the labour organization, which represents roughly 8,000 civilian and uniform members of the Toronto Police Service, wrote.

It noted that Vice President Brian Callanan attended the hospital “to support our members and, thankfully, everyone will be going home to their families.”

In a post on X, Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop Jim Jessop said his crews responded to an incident today where a Toronto police officer was stabbed “while apprehending a suspect.”

“Our firefighters provided medical care to the officer on scene. We’re thinking of the injured officer, and their colleagues, and wish them a full and speedy recovery,” he wrote.

This investigation is ongoing.
