A Corner Brook man accused of shooting a man at a home last week has been denied bail in order to protect the victim’s safety.
Scott King, 36, faces multiple firearms charges stemming from the incident on Dec. 29, including breaking and entering, assault causing bodily harm, aggravated assault, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and careless use of a firearm among other charges.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a home on Parkwood Drive at around 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, where they found a man with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, a statement at the time said. The man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
In her decision on Monday, Judge Lynn Cole denied King’s request for bail. She said it was a move to ensure the victim’s safety, adding continued detention was necessary.
Cole said she found King’s alleged use of the firearm frightening, and believed King could commit a further offence if released.
King, who had support in the Corner Brook provincial courtroom, let out a large sigh as the decision was read. He stayed in a corner of his courtroom box huddled away from reporters for much of the decision reading process.
He is scheduled to appear in court next on Jan. 13.
