Toronto police are working to piece together what happened after being called to two firearm discharges in the same Scarborough neighbourhood on Monday night.

Just after 9:15 p.m., a shot rang out at a residence on Dolly Varden Boulevard, which is near Markham Road and Ellesmere Avenue.

Toronto police say officers responded to a shooting call at a home and found “evidence of gunfire.” Damage was observed to the house window, they said.

The young family who lives there is rattled.

The homeowner, who doesn’t want to be identified, told CTV News Toronto that a shot pierced the window frame of a children’s playroom on the second floor, striking and shattering a child’s diploma that was hanging on the wall.

“I was reading a story to my sons, and I heard a glass shatter inside here,” said the man.

He said he was getting his twin six-year-old boys ready for bed around 9 p.m. when he heard a gunshot.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

“I had heard the glass shatter a minute or two after leaving that very room with my sons. And when we figured out what had happened, it was quite jarring,” said the homeowner, adding he doesn’t know why his residence was targeted.

Multiple bullet holes – at least four in the front window – can be seen at another nearby home on Clementine Square, which was shot up less than three hours later.

In this case, officers also located evidence of gunfire. Police say they found a home that had been shot at and damaged.

“I went inside, and then after three minutes, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. Oh my God. Lucky, I’m already inside,” area resident Elvira Repencol told CTV News Toronto on Tuesday.

Repencol said she had just returned home just before midnight with groceries when she heard the gunfire.

She said she believes she saw one suspect fleeing the scene.

“I saw a guy run until over there. Moving in that side, with a black jacket,” Repencol said.

No one was injured, but it’s the second time this address has been targeted.

Last month, several cars were found there riddled with bullet holes. No one was hurt in that incident.

Neighbours told CTV News Toronto that a family with three children lives there.

One man who lives nearby said the gun violence is “too close to home.”

“I’ve been here for 40 years and this would never happen here (before),” he said.

Another neighbour said he has no idea why this would happen.

“We have very good neighbours. We never had any problem with them,” the man said.

“They’re very nice people. They’re living there for more than 20 years.”
