Toronto police provide an update on the death of an 80-year-old woman in Scarborough after she was hit by a pickup truck that was backing out of a driveway.

An 80-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a pickup truck that was backing out of a driveway in Scarborough on Tuesday afternoon.

Toronto police said they got a call shortly before 2:30 p.m. for a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.

Insp. Jeff Allington told reporters that officers located the pedestrian lying on the roadway with life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was shortly pronounced dead.

“Preliminary information suggests that the truck may have been backing out of a driveway and that the female had slipped and fallen behind the truck and was then struck by that truck,” Allington said.

Scarborough collision Police are investigating after a pedestrian was fatally struck near Midland and Kingston on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026.

He added that investigators are still trying to determine the exact sequence of events and whether the woman was walking on the sidewalk or on the roadway.

The 81-year-old driver of the pickup initially left the scene but returned later.

Allington would not share with reporters how long it took the driver to come back, but said he is cooperating with investigators.

It is unclear whether the wintry mix on Tuesday played a factor in the incident. Toronto was under a freezing rain yellow warning at the time of the collision, resulting in roads and sidewalks being slick.

“I’d like to remind all drivers to be aware of their surroundings at all times to prevent these types of collisions, particularly on a night like tonight, when we have very heavy freezing rain and very slick road conditions for everyone who’s out on the road,” Allington said.

“Whether you be driving, riding or walking on the road, be aware of those slippery conditions,be careful where you step, be careful where you drive. Recognize that your vehicle is going to take a longer time to come to a stop. So please obey all the road signs, drive according to the conditions and drive safe.”
