Cape Breton Regional Police are evacuating an area of downtown Sydney following the discovery of a live explosive device this morning.

According to a news release, police were called to 153 Pitt St. around 8:30 a.m. after a suspicious item, identified as a live grenade, was found in a building.

Pitt Street has been closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic, the release said.

Police have secured and contained the area and are awaiting the arrival of military personnel and an explosive disposal unit.

Members of the public are being advised to avoid the area and follow police instructions.

An emergency alert was issued shortly before 9 a.m.
