A woman in her 90s is dead after she was found outside her seniors’ residence on Jan. 1, in Lac-au-Saumon, in Quebec’s Lower Saint-Lawrence region.

She was a resident at Domaine Lac-au-Saumon, a private seniors’ residence.

Provincial police say the woman was found outside in critical condition at 8:00 a.m. and emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate her. Her death was later confirmed at a hospital.

Provincial police say an investigation is underway to understand the circumstances of the event and an autopsy will be performed.

“As we speak, all possibilities are being considered,” said Marythé Bolduc, Sûreté du Québec spokesperson.

The director of the seniors’ residence, France Lepage, said she is deeply saddened and “in 28 years, I’ve never experienced an event like this.”

“Since it happened, it’s just been playing over and over in my head and we’re here to support the family … it’s difficult, you can imagine,” she said.

Lepage, who is also head nurse at the facility, told Radio-Canada that the woman lived in the autonomous wing of the residence for almost two years. In this section of the building, residents are free to come and go as they wish, she said.

“We have a state-of-the-art security system in place that meets all building codes. Patients with cognitive issues or those at risk of wandering wear a bracelet to restrict their access,” said Lepage.

She added that the residence provided police with all surveillance footage.
