ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WSBT) — The ripple effect from the US military operation in Venezuela also impacted countries nearby with cancelled flights and major backups at customs.

A couple from St. Joseph was visiting Aruba, but when they were ready to come home, the airspace was closed.

They were forced to find a new place to stay while they waited to find a flight.

They jumped at the first reasonably priced flight they could find, but still spent double the cost of their original ticket.

Robert and Kaylee McCormick said, “So it was just really very stressful to have that, to not know how you can get home out of a country that you’ve never been to before and then also no place to stay. So it was a little terrifying. It was beautiful, yes, but there’s no place in the home.”

The McCormicks finally made it home, but said some of their friends are still in Aruba.
