Inuvik Gas said on Wednesday the town has five days of propane on hand as it urged residents to keep conserving fuel during a spell of extreme cold.
The town’s weather station recorded a low of -46C on Tuesday and -45C on Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to remain below -30C until next week.
While attempts to reach an Inuvik Gas spokesperson on Wednesday were unsuccessful, the company issued a statement through the Town of Inuvik in which it said the cold weather had prompted high usage of propane, while the weather had closed roads and delayed deliveries of extra fuel.
“As of Wednesday afternoon, we have approximately five days of supply. That’s why we are asking the community to continue to conserve energy,” Inuvik Gas stated.
The company has asked residents to switch to diesel, wood or electric to heat their homes where possible, close window blinds or drapes to retain heat, and reduce use of gas-intensive appliances like ovens, clothes dryers and “long, hot showers.”
“Inuvik Gas is working closely with the Town of Inuvik and the governments of Yukon and Northwest Territories to prioritize the safe and reliable delivery of additional propane supplies for the community,” the company stated.
“We have additional supplies coming into the community over the next two days and roads and conditions look positive. We are also collaborating closely with Northwest Territories Power Corporation and propane suppliers on temporary solutions to boost our energy supply.”
Inuvik relies on road transport from the south to bring gas into the community.
However, in the longer term, a well north of the town being developed by the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation is set to offer a new local supply of natural gas.
