A number of schools were closed and rail services disrupted, but South Yorkshire was largely unaffected by Storm Goretti despite forecasts of up to a foot (30cm) of snow in hilly areas.
Most of Sheffield, as well as areas to the north and west of the city, were covered by an amber Met Office weather warning for snow, which was in place until 09:00.
Snow began to fall on Thursday evening, with TransPennine Express suspending all train services between Sheffield and Manchester from 18:00.
Among the schools closed for the day were King Edward VII School in Sheffield and Penistone Grammar School in Barnsley.
