The panel, which was acting on behalf of the Secretary of State for Education, found the conduct of Binns had fallen “significantly short of the standards expected of the profession”.

It was found that he had shared a taxi with three female pupils and had sexually assaulted one following a night out in a bar.

The panel also found Binns had subsequently made sexually motivated comments to the girl, asked the pupils not to discuss his actions and had “exploited his position of trust”.

In September 2021, Binns was found not guilty by a criminal court of two charges of sexual assault.

The ban means Binns has been banned from teaching indefinitely and cannot teach in any school, sixth form college, youth accommodation or children’s home in England.
