A nearby but separate hookah lounge closed in recent months after a man was shot and killed inside the business.

SEATTLE — An unidentified suspect armed with a shotgun shot a 27-year-old man early Saturday morning in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District, police said.

Dispatchers received reports of gunfire and a large disturbance around 2:45 a.m. near 12th Avenue South and South Main Street after the closure of Culture Hookah Lounge.

Officers contacted a 34-year-old man identified as the business owner, who told police he fired a handgun in an attempt to break up the disturbance. Officers transported the man to Seattle Police Headquarters, where detectives interviewed him, and later released him.

Investigators later determined that an unidentified suspect armed with a shotgun shot the victim in a parking lot across the street from the hookah lounge.

The owner, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told KING 5 that the incident began as a fight inside the lounge. He fired his weapon into the air before calling 911 when the brawl escalated outside.

The victim walked into Swedish Hospital with injuries consistent with a shotgun blast and was later transferred to Harborview Medical Center, where he was reported to be in serious but stable condition.

No suspect is in custody.

The lounge owner noted that he plans to close his business in a matter of days.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Seattle Police Department’s Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.

A nearby but separate hookah lounge closed in recent months after a man was shot and killed inside the business. City officials later designated that establishment a chronic nuisance, citing multiple violations of ordinances regulating after-hours businesses.
