Winter driving conditions forced closures in sections of at least three highways as freezing rain continued to come down in parts of southern Manitoba on Sunday.

Highway 5 was closed from Grandview to Sainte Rose du Lac, along with Highway 10 from Dauphin to the north gate of Riding Mountain National Park, the province said in an alert on Sunday afternoon.

Manitoba’s transport and infrastructure minister added Highway 20 was also closed from Fork River to Ochre River by noon.

All three highways had reopened by 4:15 p.m. that day.

The province said Highway 6 reopened after it closed for less than two hours Sunday due to winter conditions between Ashern and Saint Laurent.

The closures come hours after Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a yellow warning over freezing rain in parts of the province.

The federal agency says roads will likely become slippery, slowing down and bringing impacting rush hour traffic.

With the rain, there’s also the risk of injuries due to slips and falls as sidewalks turn icy.

Environment Canada said it issues this kind of warning when rain falls in sub-zero temperatures, creating ice build-up and icy surfaces.

Winnipeg, Dauphin, Steinbach and Portage la Prairie are among the communities in southern Manitoba under the weather warning.
