Fed up with the United States, Leon Bearden and his 16-year-old son Cody hijacked a jumbo jet to take it to Cuba on August 3, 1961.
The father and son held the pilot and flight attendants at gunpoint and demanded the flight be re-routed to Havana.
But already having been a hostage in a previous scare, pilot Byron Rickards casually stated the plane needed to land to refuel if they wanted to make it to Cuba.
Once on the ground, and not wanting to deal with so many hostages, he asked for four volunteers to stay on the flight.
