Are you a young person between the ages of of 14-24 who’s interested in civic engagement?
If so, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) may be the place for you.
MYAC, which serves as a forum for youth perspectives and provides advice to City Council on issues affecting young residents, is seeking new members.
Those interested must reside in/enrolled in secondary or post-secondary school in Sault Ste. Marie. Applicants under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or guardian to apply.
Meetings will be held either virtually or in-person, usually once a month in the evenings or after school. Those interested should expect a time commitment of between eight to 13 hours per month if they are selected for the council. For high school students, time spent on council activities can be used towards community service hours that are required to graduate.

Young people with an interest in civic engagement are invited to apply for the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC).
MYAC serves as a forum for youth perspectives and provides advice to City Council on issues affecting young residents. The Council is made up of up to 12 local youth who play an active role in community life. Members oversee an annual operating budget and are responsible for directing funding toward initiatives such as capital projects, the MYAC Leadership Scholarship and the Youth Fund – a micro-grant program that supports youth-focused programs, activities, and events across the city.
“The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council gives young people a meaningful opportunity to bring forward their ideas,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker. “We look forward to welcoming new members who want to get involved, share their perspectives and gain hands-on leadership experience while making a positive impact in Sault Ste. Marie.”
