A five-year-old child died over the weekend after crashing an all-terrain vehicle in Renfrew County, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Emergency services responded to a call at a private property in Brudenell, Lyndoch, and Raglan township on Saturday morning, OPP said on Monday.

Responders found the child, who was wearing a helmet, had been the sole operator of a tracked ATV and collided with a tree.

The child was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and then airlifted to a regional trauma centre where they died from their injuries, the release said.

OPP did not share the child’s gender or further details in the release.

A post-mortem has been scheduled and an investigation is underway.
