Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources is seeking the public’s help to track down the person who killed a deer in a Toronto cemetery.
A member of the public reported the discovery of an antlered white-tailed deer’s body to police on Jan. 1 in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Officers located a dead deer with an arrow coming out of its body, said Toronto police in an emailed statement, adding there is no suspect description at this time.
Ministry conservation officers were notified of the incident and have taken over the investigation.
Investigators believe the animal was shot with a bow and arrow sometime between Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, said ministry spokesperson Andrew Chambers.
“This is a serious offence, and the ministry is committed to holding those responsible accountable,” he said in an emailed statement.
There is no reason for anyone to be hunting deer in Toronto, Mayor Olivia Chow told CBC News. She said seeing the animals in the city is “a lovely sight” that brings many residents joy.
Anyone who spots someone hunting or walking around with a bow and arrow should contact police or Crime Stoppers, Chow said.
Police said the suspect could possibly face charges for possession of a weapon, causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, as well as injuring or endangering an animal.
