At least 32 people were killed and dozens of others were hurt when a construction crane crashed onto a moving passenger train in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday.

Video and photos circulating on social media show flames and a massive plume of smoke billowing from the train, which derailed.

Images also show first responders working the scene as they rescued people and searched for survivors, as well as remains.

The crash occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima, which is approximately 135 miles northeast of Bangkok, on a section of a planned high-speed rail project that is intended to eventually connect China with much of Southeast Asia.

The province’s Public Health Provincial Office said there were 32 deaths, while 64 others were hurt. At least seven people suffered serious injuries.

There were still three passengers missing among the nearly 200 believed to have been on board the train, the agency said in a statement.

“Nineteen bodies have been recovered, but there are still some inside the train carriages that cannot be removed yet because the crane started shifting, so the team pulled back for fear of danger,” Police Col. Thatchapon Chinnawong said, according to Reuters.

The media outlet noted that the colonel also said the people who were killed were in two of the three carriages hit by the crane.

Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan demanded an investigation to learn more about what happened leading up to the crash.
