A body found below cliffs near Whitby, in North Yorkshire, is the fourth to be found in the area in three days. The tragedy was confirmed this afternoon by North Yorkshire Police coastal team. The woman’s body was found at Sandsend, near Whitby, below the cliffs behind the main carpark.

The woman was local and in her 50s. She was last seen at 11.01am by a member of the public who called emergency services. Her death follows that of a man and a woman, understood to be in their 40s, who died on July 30 after falling from the cliffs at Whitby, and that of another woman, who was in her 60s, who was found by the cliffs near the pavillion on July 31.

Police, who say the death isn’t being treated as suspicious, are investigating. They say that the three separate tragedies are not linked in any way.

In a statement relating to the woman’s body being found, a spokesperson for police said: “Teams from the police, ambulance, coastguard, lifeboat and fire service attended. The woman’s body was recovered at 12.55pm and the scene was reopened at 2.15pm following extensive enquiries.

“It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area. Officers are supporting the woman’s family at this difficult time. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”

Witnesses or anyone with information should call 101, quoting reference number 12250143585.
