Video posted to social media showed the family of the man who was shot calling 911, with a woman saying in Spanish that ICE agents shot her husband in the leg. She said the agent had been following her husband and hit his vehicle and that agents attempted to enter their home.Â
In a statement, Department of Homeland Security officials said federal law enforcement conducted a “targeted traffic stop” of a man from Venezuela, but he fled the scene in his vehicle, crashed, then ran away. When federal agents caught up to the man, “the subject and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle.”
“The officer fired defensive shots to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg,” DHS said in the statement.Â
DHS said the officer and the subject are both in the hospital, and two other people are in custody. The shooting victim is recovering from a non-life-threatening wound.
This shooting occurred a week after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good. The FBI took over the shooting investigation and has blocked the Minnesota BCA from accessing evidence and agent statements.Â
State and city leaders have called for the FBI to collaborate with the BCA, with Gov. Tim Walz stating that Minnesotans will have a hard time trusting federal officials to do a fair investigation.Â
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty have requested that residents submit online any videos or evidence of the ICE agent shooting Renee Good.Â
