Forget about the Democrats.
A Republican lawmaker is warning President Donald Trump that his own GOP would impeach the president if he does one thing.
GOP Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska said that Republicans would look to remove Trump from office if the president follows through on threats to invade Greenland, the Daily Mail reported.
“I’ll be candid with you: There’s so many Republicans mad about this,” Bacon told the Omaha World-Herald. “If he went through with the threats, I think it would be the end of his presidency.”
Bacon continued, “He needs to know: The off-ramp is realizing Republicans aren’t going to tolerate this and he’s going to have to back off. He hates being told no, but in this case, I think Republicans need to be firm.”
Trump has said that the U.S. needs to control Greenland as a matter of national security. The president has talked about buying Greenland or taking it militarily.
The Arctic country is a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Both Greenland and Denmark have resisted Trump’s overtures and Europe has sent troops to Greenland in a signal to Trump that a takeover would not be tolerated.
Bacon voted against impeaching Trump in the House both times the Democrats brought impeachment proceedings against the president during his first term in office.
And the lawmaker, who is not seeking re-election, did not say he would definitely support impeaching Trump over Greenland, but said he would very strongly consider it.
“I don’t want to give you a definite yes or no, but I would lean that way,” he said. “It would be a total mistake to invade an ally. It would be catastrophic to our allies and everything.”
Bacon said: “It’s just the worst idea ever in my view.”
