West Vancouver police have confirmed more details of a tragic incident on Cypress Mountain Resort Thursday evening.

The West Vancouver Police Department (WVPD) says an 18-year-old Maple Ridge man died from his injuries after falling from a chairlift over a ski hill.

In a statement Friday morning, police say first responders were called to the mountain around 7:30 p.m. for reports of someone in medical distress. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

“All available evidence points to this being a tragic accident,” said police spokesperson Suzanne Birch.

“There are no obvious indications of technical or mechanical issues with the chairlift.”

Birch says the investigation is now in the hands of the BC Coroner’s Office.

The WVPD says its Victim Services team was called to the resort Thursday night.

“The deceased has been identified, and their family has been notified and is receiving support,” police added.

In a statement to 1130 NewsRadio, a resort representative confirmed the man was on the mountain as a guest.

The police’s Victim Services team was also reportedly made available to people who witnessed the death.
