Charges have been laid and a man is in custody in relation to a homicide that took place Thursday night (Jan. 15) at a hotel in Abbotsford.

Court records indicate that Sondeep Singh Gill, 26, of Abbotsford has been charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is leading the investigation.

In a press release on Friday afternoon, IHIT confirmed the charges and said the victim was a 30-year-old woman residing in Abbotsford. Her name has not been released.

Details about the relationship between the two have also not been released and are part of the investigation, the press release states.

Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi of IHIT credited the arrest to “the quick response and strong investigational work” from the Abbotsford Police Department and IHIT.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends and loved ones of the woman during this difficult time,” Dhesi said.

The Abbotsford Police Department reported on Tuesday that they responded to a “suspicious circumstance” at 11:42 a.m. at a hotel in the 32100 block of Marshall Road.

They determined that a homicide had occurred, and the incident was contained to a room in the hotel.

They said it was an isolated incident that was not believed to be connected to extortion. A man was arrested on the scene.

This is Abbotsford’s second homicide of the year. The first took place on Jan. 9, killing Navpreet Dhaliwal, 28.

No charges have yet been laid in that case.
