An ambulance carrying a person on a stretcher was spotted leaving the grounds at around 10.30am.

Police were at the scene an hour earlier.

At the height of the incident, seven ambulances and numerous fire service vehicles also converged in the Castle Gardens.

People wearing high-vis jackets could also be seen patrolling the grounds.

Medway Council, which manages the ancient monument, confirmed to KentOnline that it was supporting the emergency services where possible.

A road sweeper, who did not wish to be named, said: “I have never seen anything like this before. The only similar thing was when they had a fire at the cathedral.”

An eyewitness said a person was seen carrying a stretcher into the lower middle entrance of the 12th-century keep.

The fire service has since confirmed they were called to Castle Hill, Rochester at 8.41am to help paramedics rescue a person following reports of a “person falling from height”.

They left the scene shortly before 11am.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “Multiple crews attended the scene and assessed and treated a man in his 50s for injuries, including to his chest, femur, and ankle before taking him to King’s College Hospital by road for further medical treatment.”

The grounds remained open to the public throughout.

The castle, owned by English Heritage, attracts thousands of visitors every year.
