Trump’s tariffs over Greenland – a recappublished at 08:46 GMT

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose fresh tariffs on eight allies opposed to his proposed takeover of Greenland.

He says the import taxes will remain in place until “such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” by the US.

From 1 February 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland will be charged “a 10% Tariff on any and all goods” sent to the US, with the tariff raised to 25% on 1 June.

Trump insists the autonomous Danish territory is critical for US security and has not ruled out taking it by force.

The announcement has been met with fierce criticism from European leaders including Keir Starmer.

The UK’s PM says imposing tariffs “on allies for pursuing the collective security of Nato allies is completely wrong”.

We’ll no doubt hear more reaction to this from both Richard Tice and Lisa Nandy, stay with us.
