Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after Durham police officer and a suspect were both shot during a response to an “armed person call” in Oshawa on Sunday morning.

Durham Regional Police Service says they were called to the area of Simcoe Street South and Wentworth Street East.

During the interaction, officials say an officer and the suspect were both shot.

CP24 has learned that the shooting occurred at a home on Cedar Street.

It’s unclear what time the incident occurred, but at 11 a.m. police noted there was a “significant police presence” near Simcoe, south of Highway 401. Several officers were seen in and around ‘All Spa & Hot Tub at 744 Simcoe St. S.

The injured officer was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre in “critical but stable condition.”

The suspect, meanwhile, was taken to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

The SIU, a civilian agency, is called in to investigate when police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Police say an update is expected to follow.

Roads near the scene of the incident are currently blocked off, including Sime, which is off limits from Bloor to Erie streets.
