SAN DIEGO — The driver who fled the scene after fatally hitting a 6-year-old boy twice in Pacific Beach was taken into custody by officials on Saturday.Â

Police said that the boy, who was riding a bicycle, was eastbound on the south sidewalk of 1540 Pacific Beach Drive. He then continued to cross the west alley of the 4000 block of Ingraham Street.
Meanwhile, a 32-year-old driver who was eastbound on 1540 Pacific Beach Drive made a right turn into the alley where the boy was hit. The boy, who was on his bike, was knocked off by the impact. The driver stopped for several seconds before accelerating rapidly southbound in the alley, hitting the boy again, and fleeing from the scene.
The boy was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, according to San Diego Police. The vehicle involved in the collision was later found in National City and the driver was taken into custody. Officials said that DUI was not a factor in this collision.
